How to make a Vegan BLT

Insanely delicious recipe for tofu bacon assembled in this scrumptious classic, the BLT sandwich. The tofu is fried in extra-virgin olive oil and then braised in a flavorful mixture. It’s the best, clean-ingredient, plant-based alternative to the BLT sandwich we all know and love.

This recipe makes the tofu bacon needed for 3-4 BLT sandwiches.

Ingredients:

  • 200g firm tofu

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce/ tamari sauce

  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup

  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika, good quality – I like to use Chiquilin

  • 1/8 tsp onion powder

  • 1/8 tsp garlic powder

  • Extra-virgin olive oil to fry

For one BLT sandwich:

  • 6 slices of tofu

  • 2 slices of bread, I used German-style rye bread

  • 1 tsp of vegan aioli

  • 3-4 lettuce leaves

  • 3 slices of tomato

  • Salt, pepper

Instructions:

  1. Using a sharp knife, slice the tofu into 2mm-thick slices.

  2. Heat extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan to medium-high heat. Place tofu slices: don’t overcrowd them to make sure they have a chance to get golden and crispy. Fry for 2-3 minutes and flip. Fry for another 2 minutes. Set the slices aside on a large plate, and repeat the process with the remaining tofu.

  3. In the meantime, prepare the sauce for braising. In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, maple syrup, smoked paprika, garlic, and onion powder.

  4. Once all the slices are done, place them back on the frying pan and pour in the sauce.

  5. Braise for a few minutes, frequently tossing the slices to make sure all are evenly coated.

  6. The sauce should have reduced and been lightly caramelized within just a few minutes on medium-high heat.

  7. Remove the frying pan from the heat.

  8. Assemble the sandwich: Toast the bread slice, spread aioli, place lettuce leaves, slices of tofu bacon, tomato, and more lettuce leaves, and top with the remaining slice of bread.

  9. Enjoy!
